Question:To what extent does an electrical appliance need to be dismantled and re-assembled by a Jew to exempt it from the obligation of tevilas keilim? Answer: It is clear from the Poskim that repairing the appliance with a Jewish craftsman is only an acceptable solution if the appliance is first dismantled to a degree that it is no longer usable and requires professional intervention to re-assemble it. [This does not mean that this task must be performed by an actual professional, rather, that the degree of disassembly must be to the extent that “professional intervention” is needed to re-assemble it.] Merely dismantling components of an appliance to a lesser degree than this is, from a Halachic perspective, inconsequential, and the appliance is still obligated in tevilas keilim. |
