Question:Is one permitted to walk along the beach on Shabbos? Answer: Provided that one remains within the techum Shabbos (i.e., 2000 amos, which is slightly less than 1km) of whichever settlement that one “belongs to” for that Shabbos and does not enter the water, it is permitted to walk along the beach on Shabbos. The reason that one may not enter the water is because it is forbidden to “carry” water that is on one’s body on Shabbos (c.f. Shulchan Aruch Orach Chayim Siman 301 Se’if 49). Therefore, by exiting the water one will be (albeit unintentionally) carrying water 4 amos in a karmelis which is forbidden. Furthermore, if the beach is classified a reshus horabim it will be forbidden even to step out of the water onto the beach if there is water on one’s body, even if the distance is less than 4 amos (c.f. Mishna Berura s.k. 176). |
