Question:If a person would like to enter a shul to collect something, does he need to recite a passuk or sit down while inside? Answer:Firstly, if one is collecting an item that will be used for a mitzvah (sefer, tefillin, etc.) there is no need to sit down in the Shul or to say a possuk (c.f. Shulchan Aruch Siman 151 Se’if 1 who writes that the only requirement of learning in the Shul is when one enters purely for a mundane reason). However, if one is entering to collect a mundane item, he should ideally learn something inside the Shul (c.f. Shulchan Aruch Siman 151 Se’if 1) or at least sit down inside the Shul (Shulchan Aruch ibid) because sitting in a Shul is also considered a mitzvah. Remo (ibid) writes that one who chooses to sit inside the Shul should do so for the amount of time it takes to walk 8 cubits (c.f. Mishna Berura s.k. 13). |
