Question: Is one doesn’t have enough clean clothes for the entire nine days, is one allowed to wash during the nine days?
Answer:
Sephardim may not launder clothes during the week in which Tisha B’av occurs (Shulchan Aruch Siman 551 Se’if 3). However, this only applies to the days preceding Tisha B’av (and Tisha B’av itself) but not to the days of the week following Tisha B’av. E.g. when Tisha B’av occurs on Tuesday, Sephardim may not launder clothes from motzo’ei Shabbos until after Tisha B’av, but are permitted to launder clothes from the night after Tisha B’av.
Ashkenazim may not launder during the nine days, i.e., from Rosh Chodesh Av until Tisha B’av (Remo ibid).
An Ashkenazi who does not have enough clean clothes for the entire nine days is allowed to launder clothes during the nine days until the week in which Tisha B’av occurs (Mishna Berura ibid s.k. 29).
During the week in which Tisha B’av occurs, it is forbidden for both Sephardim and Ashkenazim to launder clothes, even if one has exhausted their supply of clean clothes. It is permissible, however, to spot clean a stain on a garment, even during the week in which Tisha B’av occurs.
