Question:Until what age can a young girl wear trousers or short sleeves? Answer:There are two different opinions regarding the minimum age that a girl needs to be properly dressed: The Mishna Berura (Bi’ur Halocho Siman 75) posits that from the age of 3 a girl must be taught to dress properly (i.e., all the areas of her body that are classified ervoh must be covered from this age). The Chazon Ish (Orach Chayim Siman 16) however, maintained that the minimum age is roughly 7 – depending on physical development. Rav Moshe Feinstein was also of this opinion. There are different minhogim in different circles regarding which of these two opinions to follow. (See Oz v’Hodor Levusho Chapter 6 Section S for a more thorough discussion about this point.) And even within the confines of a private house it is correct that young girls (from the age mentioned above) should dress in a tzni’us fashion, even if no men are present. |
