Question: I accidently cooked chicken liver that wasn’t kashered (לא מוכשר) in a pot and used this ladle to stir it while on the fire. This ladle/spoon is made of some sort of heat resistant hard plastic/silicone. I assume I need to kasher the pot (simple metal) with libum. My question is: what to do with this ladle/spoon?
Also I served the food in a glass plate and used metal cutlery. What should I do with those?
When I served the food it was hot and I couldn’t immediately eat it.
Answer
Thank you for contacting us.
1) Regarding the pot you are quite correct that it must be kashered with libbun.
2) Many Poskim maintain that plastic and silicone are substances that are not to be able to be kashered, so unless there are other tzirufim, which there do not appear to be in this scenario, the ladle cannot be kashered.
3) If the liver was directly transferred from the pan to the glass plate, the plate should ideally be kashered as follows:
After being thoroughly cleaned and waiting 24 hours, pour boiling water directly from a kettle onto the glass plate.
(Although glass is a material that is generally not able to be kashered, in this situation there are sufficient tzirufim to allow kashering in this manner.)
4) If the liver was not directly transferred from pan to glass plate, the plate does not need kashering and should just be thoroughly cleaned with cold water and soap before further use.
5) Provided that the metal cutlery were not used in the pan, and only on the plate, they do not need kashering and should just be thoroughly cleaned with cold water and soap before further use.
