Question:
When does one need to make a new brocha on donning Tallis/ Tzitzis?
Answer:
The Shulchan Aruch holds that if one’s Tallis is removed for any period of time, even if one intended to put it back on again immediately, he has to make a new brocha.
The Rema disagrees and holds that if you remove a Tallis with the intention to put it back on within “a short period of time” you do not make a new brocha upon putting the Tallis back on, as long as it is within that short period of time.If one removes the Tallis intending to put it back on right away and then does not put it on right away but rather tarries, a new brocha is needed. It is unclear what the poskim mean by “a short period of time”. Many authorities define it as a unit of time, opinions range from a half hour to three hours, while other authorities define it as the time it takes to do a certain activity.Sephardim follow the opinion of this short time being half an hour. When changing one’s location there is no obligation to make a new brocha on one’s Tzitzis.
If one removed his Tallis to give to someone who is getting an aliyah (or duchaning), no new brocha is needed when putting on the Tallis back on after getting it back. However, a person who gave his Tallis to someone for an aliyah and instead it gets used for all the olim and is only returned after a half hour, a new brocha is needed when putting it back on. If someone took the Tallis from a person’s shoulders without asking, the owner does not need to make a new brocha when they get it back, unless the owner feared not getting the Tallis back at all.If one goes to the bathroom, one does not make a new brocha on the Tallis upon exiting the bathroom even if it were to take a half hour.
If one has a Tallis with a פסוק written on the crown, one must make a new brocha after returning and when putting the Tallis back on, since it would be forbidden to bring that Tallis into a bathroom. One does not make a new brocha after bathing. However, it is preferable to have in mind while making the brocha in the morning only to cover the Tzitzis until that point in time and therefore then after bathing a new brocha would not be required. However, if one bathed for a long time (and removed his mind from Tzitzis) he should make a new brocha. After taking a shower, no new brocha is needed (unless one takes an exceptionally long time and removed one’s mind from Tzitzis). After Tevillah no new brocha is needed. After going swimming a new brocha is needed unless it was short and one kept his mind on Tzitzis. There is a dispute as to whether one has to make a brocha on one’s Tzitzis when putting them on again after having gone to sleep without them during the day.If one sleeps at night in Tzitzis, there is a disagreement amongst poskim as to whether one needs to make a brocha in the morning since one has never taken one’s Tzitzis off. We rule one should not make a new brocha on them upon waking up, rather one should exempt them by making a brocha on the Tallis (or listening to someone else make the brocha on the Tallis). Additionally, one should not remove the Tzitzis with the intent of not putting them back on and then put them back on anyway, since according to some that may be causing a brocha levatolah. If one removes the Tallis with intent not to put it back on for a while or not at all, a new brocha is needed even if one put it back on right away.If one removes one’s Tallis in order to put on another Tallis and then changes one’s mind, a new brocha is needed. If one changes one’s Tallis for another a new brocha is needed on the other one, given he did not have that new one in mind when he made the brocha in the morning.
When switching Tzitzis on Friday for Shabbos, if when donning the weekday pair in the morning one had in mind for one’s brocha to additionally cover the Shabbos pair, one does not need a new brocha. If one did not have this intent, a new brocha would be needed. If one’s normal practice is to switch into a Shabbos pair, even stam intent is enough to cover that pair, and no new brocha would be required.
If one removed one’s Tallis in davening by accident thinking that davening was over, a new brocha is needed when putting it back on. |
